The Landes, a traditionally rural department is today largely open to tourism and has a rate of industrial employment that is higher than average in Aquitaine.
Promoting the department's main natural assets (quality of the landscape, water resources, ocean climate) by sustained development of major sectors (farm-produce and wood industries, hydrotherapy) as well an active diversification policy and encouragement of French and overseas investment have all contributed to reinforcing the department's economic fabric and creating new jobs.
2nd largest department in France in size: 22.4% of the size of the region.
4th most populated department in Aquitaine: 11.1% of the population of Aquitaine.
