The economy of the Landes has for a long time been based on developing the natural resources of a department that was traditionally rural. Forestry exploitation, agricultural production and welcoming visitors in the spas have therefore been the department's major economic business sectors.
Over the last twenty years an aggressive diversification policy has been undertaken to strengthen the Landes' economy and create extra jobs in new sectors. At the same time the wood-paper and farm-produce sectors have also been developed.
In this way, the aeronautics sector as well as fine and applied chemistry, iron and steel and electronics are today, through the presence of high-performing high technology companies, major assets for the Landes and its economic fabric.
Services have also remained important in the number of jobs available particularly in health, social action, tourism, leisure and transport.
"Room to move", means that someone with a project and a business creator can find, in the Landes, properly equipped industrial sites of all sizes and close to major road and rail links.
Belonging to the "Invest in France" network and DATAR correspondent, the Landes General Council, and particularly the Economic Development Department can welcome international companies in optimal conditions and provide them with the necessary information to help them in the different stages of their project.
